Mentoring is typically more directive than coaching, and draws on the mentor's experience and skills which are transferred as knowledge to the client. Ideally, the client takes on these additional skills and is able to move forward with more confidence. A mentor is a trusted friend, counsellor or teacher, usually a more experienced person. In Greek mythology, Mentor was the son of Alcumus, a friend of Odysseus, who looked after Odysseus's son Telemachus, when Odysseus left for the Trojan war. How does mentoring work?
The client spends around 45 minutes with their mentor every week or two, in a scheduled session (usually face-to-face). They discuss business projects and processes and work together to achieve the objectives. All sessions are confidential but the mentor may recommend contacts and resources to further the client's progress. Overall, mentoring is about focused learning.
